It is reported that an immigration officer has been shot dead at Bawku in the Upper East Region and two other officers are fighting for their lives at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.
The three immigration officers were driving from Bawku to Missiga when their vehicle was shot at by unknown gunmen, resulting in the death of 42-year-old Philip Motey.
The other two officers, Eric Ayibiya, 30, and Laurence Afri, 42, shot multiple times are being treated at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.
The incident is reported to have happened on Monday, April 3, 2023.
It’s unclear why the immigration vehicle was shot at by unknown gunmen on its way to the Missiga station in Bawku.
In the same vein, it is reported that unknown gunmen killed one Imoro Bello, a yellow-yellow tricycle operator on the same Monday.
Reacting to the incidents, some residents blamed the killings on the long-running Bawku ethnic conflict.
Bawku has been in the news since November 2021 and the events have continued to take violent and unpredictable twists and turns in the past few weeks.
Two months ago, the Minister for the Interior renewed the curfew hours imposed on the Bawku Municipality and its environs in the wake of fresh clashes on February 8, 2023.
Bawku Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Adamu Seidu, revealed that at least 10 people were fired upon and six deaths were recorded within three days.
It was reported that the deceased persons included a 12-year-old boy.
Consequently, the Minister for the Interior took swift action to address the situation.
The curfew will hold between 8:00 pm to 5:00 am daily.
