The former Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Mr. Enoch Teye Mensah, popularly called E.T Mensah is dead. He was 77.
He was currently a member of the Council of State representing the Greater Accra region.
He previously served as the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, A.M.A, a position otherwise titled Mayor of Accra. This appointment had origins in the PNDC government that ruled Ghana from 1981 to 1992, and was led by Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.
Under the Fourth Republic, he became the first Minister of Youth and Sports, arguably the longest-serving in that position. It was in his tenure that the Ghana male Under-17 soccer team, the Black Starlets shined as the team won the FIFA world cup in 1991 and 1995. Part of Boxer Azumah Nelson’s exploits on the world stage and that of other Ghanaian notable boxers interfaced the tenure of Mr. E .T Mensah as sports minister.
He was appointed Minister of Employment and Social Welfare by President John Atta Mills. He became one of the five “wise men” under President John Mahama who constituted the inner circle to coordinate government activities. That shortlived with the banter as to essence of that political role in the last NDC administration.
Another drama that engulfed him was the fierce contest for the Ningo-Prampram seat with the current occupant, Hon. Sam George. Mr. Mensah lost the party’s primaries, and that put paid to his long tenure as a legislator.
He was deemed a close associate of former President Rawlings.
