Some nurses at the Gomoa Polyclinic and three police officers have been physically attacked by unknown individuals believed to have come from Gomoa Dominase and Potsin in the Central Region.
This was triggered by the death of a 35-year-old man, identified as Ato.
Ato was rushed to the clinic after collapsing at home around 5:00 pm on Wednesday.
According to the medical superintendent of the facility, Dr Jerry Kwaku Vlad Nkegbe, a family brought their relative to the facility for treatment, but he later passed away.
The group besieged the facility and demanded the body of their deceased relative.
Upon being turned down by the nurses on duty for failing to follow due process, the group started attacking the medical officers on duty while destroying the properties of the facility.
“They damaged the computer at the OPD that we use to register patients. They damaged plastic chairs. They damaged a BP apparatus, spirits and other commodities we use. They also entered the lab and destroyed things. We are still compiling the comprehensive list the DCE has asked us to submit to him to see how best they can reimburse the facility so that service to God and country can be continued,” Dr Jerry Kwaku Vlad Nkegbe disclosed.
According to an eyewitness, Kojo Poku, he managed to secure the wards, preventing further damage by locking them.
Despite their efforts, the angry residents forcefully entered the cold room and retrieved the body of the deceased without adhering to the necessary protocols.
“The police have arrested some of them, and the police have promised to follow up on arresting the other assailants who committed that dastardly act,” Dr Nkegbe added.
He said staff members were gripped by fear and panic as the perpetrators had threatened to track them down at their homes.
In response to the escalating situation, police officers have taken control of the facility to safeguard lives and protect property.
