The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called on the Judicial Secretary to release a statement regarding Justice Yonny Kulendi’s alleged involvement in the controversial audio that captures the Attorney-General and the third accused person in the ambulance purchase trial.
The third accused, Richard Jakpa, alleged in open court that Godfred Dame had repeatedly sought his assistance to implicate the first accused and Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
Under cross-examination by counsel for the Minority Leader, the trial judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, cautioned Mr Jakpa to be direct in his responses and avoid wasting the court’s time.
In response to the judge’s caution, the Attorney-General accused Mr Jakpa of defending the Minority Leader.
This accusation prompted Mr Jakpa to retort that the Attorney-General seemed aggrieved because he had previously failed to get him [Jakpa] to help the state build a case against Dr Ato Forson.
Justice Yonny Kulendi’s name popped up after a press conference by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to defend their leader who is facing trial.
Subsequently, the NPP fired back, insisting that Mr Dame did nothing wrong.
In a Facebook post, the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, revealed that the meeting in question involving the Attorney-General and Mr Jakpa occurred at the residence of Justice Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi, with the Attorney-General attending at Justice Kulendi’s request.
He indicated that a full recording would establish that the Attorney General never requested Richard Jakpa to skew his testimony.
Following this development, Mr Dafeamekpor insists that the judiciary cannot remain silent.
He demands explanations regarding Justice Kulendi’s alleged involvement to ensure continued public trust in Ghana’s legal system.
“I think our Judicial Secretary should consider making a statement on the allegation of Justice Kulendi’s involvement in this matter. It is very important for me that the Judicial Secretary comes out to clarify this matter. It is very important,” he insisted.
Meanwhile, several calls have been made for the Attorney-General to step aside following the development.
However, the NPP maintains that his reputation is untarnished and that he will not resign.
