A fire outbreak has destroyed several wooden structures along the railway line near the Odaw drain at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
The fire, which started around 5:30 pm on Wednesday, ravaged the entire area located under a GRIDCo high-voltage transmission line.
Firefighters swiftly responded to the distress call, working tirelessly to douse the flames while victims watched helplessly.
In a Facebook post by the Ghana National Fire Service, the “fire was finally extinguished by the able Firefighters…..Kudos to the responding officers, the Accra Regional Fire Officer, Ag. Director of Operations, and all other officers for a selfless sacrifice and preventing any civilian or firefighter casualties in the process.”
Despite the destruction of some wooden structures and containers, many other structures and high-tension poles were salvaged, ensuring the safeguarding of the electrical power supply.
The GNFS’s Public Relations Officer, ADO Alex King Nartey, suggested that illegal electrical connections could have caused the fire.
This comes after a fire outbreak on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, which destroyed a section of the Commonwealth Hall at the University of Ghana, Legon.
The flames destroyed one of the Commonwealth Towers and other properties inside the building.
Videos from the scene show the flames blazing at the very top of the building at the amphitheatre.
According to Lydia Alhassan, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, firefighters responded quickly and successfully quenched the fire.
She added that no casualties were reported and assured of the safety of the students.
Meanwhile, the GNFS has launched an investigation into the incident.
Although the cause of the fire was not immediately known, some residents alleged an electrical fault caused it.
