A day filled with anticipation and excitement quickly turned into disappointment as many bigwigs of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) were shown the exit.
At the end of the December 7 polls, several prominent incumbents, once considered stalwarts, witnessed their bids for re-election abruptly dashed.
Per results released by the Electoral Commission (EC), their defeat has come to many as a surprise.

- Henry Quartey loses Ayawaso Central seat
The Minister for Interior and NPP MP for Ayawaso Central has lost his seat to the National Democratic Congress’ Abdul Rauf-Tubazu.
While Mr. Quarter had 23,339 (44.35%), Abdul Rauf-Tubazu (NDC) amassed 29,965 (54.99%) to dethrone the experienced MP.
Mr. Quartey had served two terms as MP, having won the 2016 and 2020 elections.
- Egyapa Mercer loses Sekondi seat to NDC’s Blay Armah
Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Sekondi, has been defeated in a closely contested election by Blay Nyameke Armah of the NDC.
Egyapa Mercer, representing the NPP, garnered 11,084 votes, representing 42.94% of the total valid votes, while Blay Nyameke Armah secured 14,558 votes, corresponding to 56.40%.
Out of the 25,813 votes cast, 171 ballots were rejected.
This marks a significant shift in the Sekondi parliamentary seat, as Egyapa Mercer had previously dominated in the 2016 elections.
- NPP loses Kwesimintsim constituency to NDC’s Fiifi Buckman
The NPP Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim Constituency in the Western Region, Dr Prince Hamid Armah has lost his seat to the NDC’s Philip Fiifi Buckman.
Dr Armah, the current Deputy Minister for Works and Housing who once served as the Executive Secretary of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), polled 13, 317 votes as against Mr Fiifi Buckman’s 15,927 votes.
An independent parliamentary candidate polled 1,835 votes. The total valid votes cast is 31,079 with 219 rejected ballots.
- NDC surprises NPP as it snatches Assin Central parliamentary seat
For the first time in 24 years, the opposition NDC has won the Assin Central parliamentary seat.
securing only 26,575 votes, while Rev. Addo garnered 31,866 votes, marking a significant victory for the NDC in the constituency.
This loss signifies a major political shift in Ablekuma West, a constituency that has long been considered a stronghold for the governing NPP.
- Andy Appiah Kubi loses Asante Akyem North seat
Asante Akyem North MP, Andy Appiah Kubi has been unseated by the Independent candidate and businessman Ohene Kwame Frimpong.
Ohene Kwame Frimpong won the elections with a huge margin after securing 26, 926 votes.
The NPP’s candidate, Appiah Kubi polled 8,933 votes while the NDC candidate Kofi Asamoah polled 2,469 votes.
