A quiet afternoon turned tragic at Buduburam in the Gomoa East district when a large tree collapsed on three people, leaving a young girl in critical condition and two others, including a pregnant woman, with injuries.
The incident happened behind the Ecobank area where the victims, a pregnant woman and two children, had been resting under the shade of a tree.
Without warning, the tree gave way, trapping them beneath it. Eyewitnesses say others who were nearby managed to escape in time.
The 9-year-old girl is currently receiving emergency care at St. Gregory Hospital in Buduburam.
Medical staff there say she needs urgent transfer to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for advanced treatment.
The pregnant woman and the other child, though injured, are said to be in stable condition.
Local Assemblyman for the Gomoa Buduburam Electoral Area, Emmanuel Dogbey, rushed to the scene after being alerted. He has since been in contact with the victims’ families and the district authorities.
“I was informed of a disaster behind the Ecobank that a big tree had fallen on a pregnant woman and two kids. I ran to the hospital and saw them, and I have made sure that they are being taken care of. The doctors told me one of the kids had to be transferred to Winneba Trauma, but the other kid and the pregnant woman were stable,” Mr. Dogbey said.
Authorities are expected to assess the safety of similar trees in the area to prevent future incidents.
