Ghana’s Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the leadership of Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University to prioritise peace and stability as the school works through ongoing labour issues.
During the inauguration of the university’s newly formed Governing Council in Accra, the Minister expressed concern over repeated staff agitations that have disrupted academic activities.
He urged the Council to take swift action in addressing grievances and building a culture of dialogue.
“Industrial disputes and conflicts are, unfortunately, part of institutional life,” Mr. Iddrisu said. “What matters most is how we manage these issues to ensure peace and harmony prevail on our campuses.”
Since its establishment in April 2020, the university has faced several governance-related challenges that have led to labour unrest, affecting both teaching and administrative functions.
A major concern raised by the Minister is the institution’s lack of student accommodation, which he believes limits its growth and attractiveness.
“To date, this is one of the only universities in Ghana without a hostel,” he noted. “I am pleased to announce that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has been directed to allocate funds for the construction of a 600-bed hostel this year. Work should commence soon.”
Professor Julius Fobil, who chairs the newly inaugurated Council, responded with assurance that the team is committed to resolving the issues.
He pledged to apply his leadership experience to restore calm and move the university forward.
The Minister’s message underscores the urgent need for stronger governance and infrastructure investment to help the university thrive and serve its growing student population.
