Officials from the National Security have arrested six Indian nationals for engaging in illegal gold trade.
Three of the suspects were arrested at Enyinam in the Eastern Region, while the remaining three were arrested at Adiembra in the Ashanti Region.
During the operation, the National Security operatives retrieved thousands of cedis and hundreds of gold bars, as well as money counting machines, from the foreigners.
The operation, which took place a few days ago, was led by the National Security Coordinator, DCOP Abdul Osman.
In a press briefing held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, GoldBod spokesperson Prince Minkah indicated that the individuals arrested will face the law to serve as a deterrent to others.
This follows the implementation of the new Ghana Gold Board Act, which required all foreigners to withdraw from engaging in the local gold trading sector by April 30, 2025.
Mr. Minkah clarified that the first batch of foreigners were arrested before the deadline; hence, the individuals arrested will not be prosecuted but will go through the legal process of deportation.
However, the second batch of culprits will be prosecuted in court under Ghana’s law.
“But for the latest bust which has occurred, they will face the full rigours of the law. Per the arrest and what we got to know, with them were golds, money counting machines and some cedis as well, and these things have been confiscated.
“For the second batch, they will go to court and face the law. This is a warning to every foreigner in Ghana, local gold trading is the sole reserve of the GoldBod,” he noted.
