A coalition of political parties, spearheaded by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is currently protesting the suspension of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, by President John Dramani Mahama.
The other political parties that form the coalition are the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the People’s National Party (PNP).
The ongoing protest intends to resist what they term a “reckless assault” on democracy in Ghana.
The protesters have gathered at the Supreme Court premises to begin the demonstration against what the coalition described as an unconstitutional assault on the judiciary and the erosion of democratic gains.
According to the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, during the demonstration, three petitions would be presented: the first at the Supreme Court, the second to Parliament and the third to the presidency.
Mr Boakye explained that they would walk from the Supreme Court to Parliament, where a petition would be presented, then to the presidency to present another petition.
He added that the nationwide demonstration is not about politics but about principles and protecting the constitution as well as ensuring that the judiciary remains the last bastion of the country’s democracy.
