The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has decided to suspend its planned 20% increase in public transport fares, which was set to begin on Friday, August 8, 2025.
This decision was announced by the Transport Ministry following a high-level meeting held between ministry officials and road transport unions on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The meeting aimed to discuss concerns regarding the inadequate stakeholder consultations prior to the proposed fare hike.
In a statement released by the Transport Ministry post-meeting, it was stated that GRTCC and other transport operators concurred that the fare increase would not proceed, highlighting the importance of inclusive discussions for any future fare changes.
“Transport Operators following the meeting have agreed to suspend the purported 20% increment in public transport fares as a result of the lack of broader consultations on the decision.” The statement said.
Additionally, the statement reminded all operators to continue the existing fare reduction, which has been in effect since May 2025.
“Transport Operators have therefore agreed to maintain the implementation of the 15% reduction in public transport fares which took effect on 24th May, 2025”.
“We count on the cooperation of all transport operators and the general public,” the statement read.
The Ministry expressed, “We count on the cooperation of all transport operators and the general public.”
This decision is expected to provide relief for commuters who were concerned about the timing of the fare increase amid ongoing economic difficulties.
Meanwhile, Transport authorities have pledged to conduct broader consultations before making any future fare adjustments.
In closing, the Ministry reiterated, “We count on the cooperation of all transport operators and the general public”.
