Franklin Cudjoe from IMANI Africa has suggested that Ghana might have been able to negotiate a reduction of the 15% tariff currently imposed on the nation.
He argues that the recent reversal of visa restrictions by the Trump administration is linked to Ghana’s acceptance of deportees from West Africa.
Cudjoe contends that the country’s leadership could have focused on securing a better deal regarding the tariff cut, rather than merely addressing the visa issue.
In a Facebook post sharing his viewpoint, he emphasised that such developments shouldn’t be celebrated on social media, particularly given that Ghanaians have previously experienced these conditions.
He stated, “Frankly, my brother Honourable Okudzeto, I wish this had not been posted and celebrated. We had this already. Yes, l know the Trump administration threatened visa restrictions, but we could have negotiated for more, perhaps a good reduction of the 15% tariff imposed on Ghana.
“Knowing that Trump is a deal maker on almost everything and given our President’s daring, audaciously great speech on Gaza, we should not be settling for this visa pittance. Is this all we got from taking in our deportee West African neighbours? Anyways”.
