The Koforidua High Court has dismissed the parliamentary election petition filed by former Suhum MP, Kwadjo Asante, ruling that the case had no merit and failed to prove any electoral irregularities.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, December 18, the Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku, explained that cross-examination by lawyers for the respondents exposed major weaknesses in the petitioner’s claims, leaving the court with no basis to overturn the election results.
The court also awarded GH¢200,000 in costs and damages against Kwadjo Asante, rejecting his request for a lower amount.
The respondents had initially asked for GH¢500,000 to cover the year-long trial.
According to Sammi Awuku, the court found that the petition lacked credible evidence and could not stand.
He said the cross-examination conducted by Lawyer Nimako and his legal team clearly showed that the petitioner had no proof to support his claims.
As a result, the court granted GH¢200,000 in costs and damages to the respondents for the time and resources spent during the trial.
Kwadjo Asante, who contested the 2024 parliamentary election as an independent candidate, had asked the court to cancel the Suhum election results and order a re-run.
However, the court ruled that the election outcome must stand.
The court therefore upheld the victory of Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, who won the seat with 16,855 votes.
NDC’s Prince Kwadwo Addo Tabiri came second with 15,259 votes, while Kwadjo Asante placed third with 14,860 votes.
