The executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ayawaso East Constituency have expressed disapproval of the Majority Caucus in Parliament regarding their calls to invalidate the recent parliamentary primary held by the party in the constituency.
In a statement issued by its leader, Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Caucus referenced allegations of vote buying and characterised the results of the primary, which were won by Baba Jamal, the former Ghana High Commissioner to Nigeria, as misaligned with the party’s objective to rejuvenate Ghana’s political landscape and restore integrity to the democratic process.
Speaking in an interview, Musah Ali, the Communications Officer for the Ayawaso East NDC, rejected the concerns put forth by the caucus, asserting that the Majority Caucus ought to concentrate on issues within their own constituencies rather than interfere in the matters of Ayawaso East.
“The communiqué by the Majority is moot, in the sense that none of them was there. I challenge any parliamentarian to come to us and tell us that he or she was on the ground and that this is what they observed. None of them was here, yet they want to make a decision for us and impose a candidate on us.
“The call to annul the election is an insult to our integrity and that of the constituency executives. They must come with proof that the candidates indeed bought our consciences before we went to vote. They must mind their business; we won’t allow them to throw dust into the eyes of our people. they should focus on their constituencies,” he said in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Channel One News.
Musah Ali further conveyed his dissatisfaction with the national leadership of the party for launching an investigation into the primary without prior consultation with the Ayawaso East Constituency Executive Committee.
“No one has come to us to complain that something went wrong in the election. So everything we are hearing is hearsay.
“The fact of the matter is that there was a clean election, and we managed to secure a candidate. As of now, the constituency is united behind the candidate until the party says otherwise,” he added.
