The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a public alert cautioning customers about fraudsters who are taking advantage of payment processes, emphasising that the power distributor no longer accepts physical cash for any transactions.
In a notice directed to the public, ECG stated that it has “gone fully cashless” and does not solicit payment for services via phone calls, a strategy designed to enhance controls and protect customers from financial scams.
The company recommended that customers ensure all payments for electricity services, fees, and bills are made solely through officially sanctioned channels.
As per the notice, payments must be initiated personally by customers using the ECG Power App or the company’s short code, *226#.
ECG also warned the public to regard unsolicited calls or messages requesting payment with scepticism, stressing that such communications do not come from the company. Customers were encouraged to stay alert and verify all payment requests before proceeding with any actions.
To aid in the fight against fraudulent activities, ECG urged customers to quickly report any suspicious calls or messages to its customer service line at 0302-611611.
The power distributor called upon the public to support its anti-fraud initiative, highlighting that customer collaboration is essential in protecting both consumers and the company from financial losses.
