The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has called upon oil marketing companies and bulk transport operators to enhance safety protocols in light of a deadly explosion near Nsawam.
This advice follows the recent fuel tanker fire incident on the Accra-Nsawam Highway near Okanta in the early hours of Saturday, February 14, 2026, leading to the death of six people.
The Authority has advocated for more rigorous vehicle inspection and maintenance practices, improved coupling and loading procedures, better driver training, effective fatigue management systems, elevated competency standards, and strict adherence to hazardous goods transportation regulations.
The NRSA, in a statement, indicated that this appeal was prompted by a tragic motor accident that took place at approximately 0430 hours on Friday, February 14, 2026, at Ntoaso along the Accra–Suhum Dual Carriageway near Nsawam.
Initial reports suggested that a fuel tanker carrying petrol from Tema to Kumasi lost control.
The tanker’s bulk reportedly separated from the tractor head, fell onto the roadside, and subsequently exploded.
The ensuing fire consumed several vehicles and motorcycles that were travelling behind the tanker.
The Authority stressed that the transportation of petroleum products and other flammable substances poses inherent risks that necessitate the highest standards of operational safety and regulatory compliance.
It underscored the importance of strengthening emergency preparedness and response mechanisms.
The NRSA urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching accident scenes, strictly follow traffic instructions, and maintain safe following distances, especially when travelling near heavy-duty and hazardous goods vehicles.
It warned road users, particularly pedestrians and individuals who rush to accident scenes to siphon fuel from fallen tankers, to refrain from such perilous behaviour, as the presence of flammable substances significantly heightens the risk of explosions and deadly fires.
The Authority praised the rapid action taken by the Ghana National Fire Service teams from Suhum and Nsawam for their prompt efforts in controlling and extinguishing the fire, thereby averting further loss of life and property.
It conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and expressed sympathy for those who were injured in the incident.
“We are saddened by reports confirming multiple fatalities, including unidentified victims, and injuries to other road users who have since been conveyed to nearby health facilities for medical attention,” the statement said.
