The government has announced that the proposed renaming of the Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport forms part of a broader strategy to re-establish a national airline.
According to Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the move represents a strategic reset aimed at redefining Ghana’s aviation positioning within the West African sub-region.
Speaking at the launch of the 40th anniversary of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority on Monday, February 16, Mr Nikpe stressed that the proposed rebranding of the country’s main international gateway is not merely cosmetic, but foundational to reviving a national carrier expected to begin operations in the coming months.
“We are working hard, as I said, to rename the Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. And we believe that this will be successful. And when it is done, it will now create space and room for us to be able to re-establish the national air carrier that we Ghanaians all yearn for,” he said.
The government announced on February 3, 2026, plans to rename Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as Accra International Airport.
The change, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga said, will be effected through legislation to be presented by the Minister for Transport.
