Member of Parliament (MP) for Oforikrom Constituency, Michael Kwasi Aidoo, has noted that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) possessed the power to annul the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary primary and, as a result, penalize Alsjai Baba Jamal, yet opted not to utilize that authority.
“Had the party established a commission of inquiry and the commission determined that individuals were culpable, the party could have annulled the election and appointed a replacement,” he stated.
The internal election for Ayawaso East, which resulted in Baba Jamal being declared the winner, was overshadowed by extensive accusations of vote buying.
Members of the NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament advocated for the election’s annulment.
Nevertheless, following investigations, the party affirmed Jamal’s victory.
Hon Aidoo, however, raised concerns regarding the reliability of political figures.
“You support one candidate, then subsequently advocate for the election to be invalidated when your candidate does not prevail,” he remarked.
He further noted that since the Electoral Commission oversaw the election process, any annulment could have resulted in legal disputes.
Nonetheless, he maintained that the party had mechanisms at its disposal had it opted to take decisive action.
