
The Ghana Police Service has given details on the circumstances surrounding the robbery attack involving Berekum Chelsea football club along the Akyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) Road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region.
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, six armed men were involved in the robbery, three of whom were carrying pump-action guns.

A police statement dated Monday, April 13, 2026, indicated that the incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at about 10:30 PM, when the attackers targeted a VIP bus transporting about 30 players and officials of Berekum Chelsea from Samreboi to Berekum.
“Police patrol teams responded to distress calls and proceeded to the scene where a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20, carrying about thirty (30) football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea from Samreboi to Berekum, had skidded into a bush while attempting to escape from six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns,” portions of the statement read.

During the attack, the robbers opened fire, leaving one of the passengers, a footballer identified as Dominic Frimpong, with gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but died while receiving treatment, the statement said.
“During the attack, Dominic Frimpong, a footballer, sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, but unfortunately passed away while receiving treatment,” police stated.
Further details indicated that another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of an amount of GH¢4,500.00 during the incident.
Police said they retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to support ongoing investigations.
“Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was also robbed of GH¢4,500.00. Two spent BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene to assist investigations,” it added.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area as part of efforts to track down the suspects.
The police have, therefore, assured the public that efforts are underway to arrest the perpetrators.
