The Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite and recapture power from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking to some party faithfuls in a video that has been shared on social media, Assafuah emphasised the need for collective efforts and unity within the party, regardless of who emerges as the NPP’s flagbearer after their pending national delegates conference.
According to him, the party must rally behind whoever is chosen, especially considering the two leading figures: former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.
He cautioned that if the NPP fails to secure power after the tenure of President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, could eventually become president of Ghana.
Ghanaians are beginning to forget about merit – Asiedu Nketiah
“Some people here support Bawumia, others support Ken and that is okay because we are all party people.
“Anybody who knows my political lineage knows that I am close to NAPO and since NAPO is close to Ken, I am also close to Ken. But that does not mean I will support him. It is not because I dislike him but I just won’t stand anywhere and speak ill of Ken,” he said.
He added that, “After the elections, we need everyone on board to ensure we win the 2028 Election. If we fail, we will have His Excellency Asiedu Nketiah as president.”
Although Asiedu Nketiah has not formally declared his intention to contest the 2028 Election, there are growing speculations that he is likely to succeed Mahama as the NDC’s presidential candidate.
These speculations have intensified following Nketiah’s 16 regional tour across the country to thank delegates for the NDC’s victory in the 2024 Election.
