Divisional chiefs from the Bogoso-Prestea Traditional Area have called on the government to fast truck the redevelopment of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine.
In a formal appeal to President John Dramani Mahama, the chiefs expressed concern over the slow progress of the redevelopment of the mine.
The statement was signed by Nana Adu Fanyin II, the Divisional Chief of Bondaye Nsuta, Nana Kwesi Sompreh II, Divisional Chief of Bogoso, and Nana Nteboa Prah IV, the Divisional Chief of Prestea Himan.
The traditional leaders noted that the mine, once a major economic pillar in the area, has historically provided employment, supported local businesses, and contributed significantly to community development.
They recalled that the previous leaseholder, Future Global Resources, had its license terminated by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in September 2024 due to its inability to meet financial and operational obligations.
According to the chiefs, it was their expectation that the new lease holder would fast truck the process of binging the mine to full productivity.
“As custodians of the land, we continue to receive concerns regarding the slow pace of development,” the petition stated.
The chiefs emphasised that the Bogoso-Prestea Mine remains a strategic national asset with significant mineral reserves and the potential to contribute meaningfully to the country’s gold output and national revenue if properly managed.
They stressed that the long-term sustainability of the mine would depend on the involvement of an active investor to rehabilitate operations and unlock its full potential, particularly in underground mining and refractory mineral extraction.
The chiefs reaffirmed their commitment to supporting responsible mining practices that promote development, employment, and social stability within the area.
They expressed confidence that decisive intervention from the presidency would help secure the future of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine and improve livelihoods in the affected communities.
