A desperate search is underway in Diaso, a town in Ghana’s Central Region, after a galamsey pit collapsed and trapped a group of illegal miners underground.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, May 24, 2025, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Eyewitnesses say the miners were working inside the pit when it suddenly caved in. Since then, residents, volunteers, and local authorities have been digging tirelessly, trying to reach those believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. Over 24 hours have passed, and none of the bodies have been recovered. As time stretches on, the community grows increasingly anxious.
“This is heartbreaking. We are still digging, but it’s not looking good. Everyone is trying their best,” said a local resident who joined the rescue efforts.
The disaster has once again drawn attention to the dangers of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. Beyond the environmental destruction it causes, galamsey continues to claim lives, often in the most tragic of ways.
No official statement has been released by local authorities, but many in the area are calling for a stronger crackdown on illegal mining and better safety measures for those who risk their lives in search of livelihood.
As the search continues, hope is fading, but community members remain determined to find the missing miners and bring some closure to the tragedy.
