It has emerged that the recent uproar in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), spurred on by the scandalous reshuffle of the party’s parliamentary leadership, has now been contained.
It follows the intervention of former President John Dramani Mahama, who is largely expected to lead the NDC as their next presidential candidate for the 2024 general election.
According to reports, the disarray caused by the recent changes in the Minority leadership did not please the 2020 NDC presidential candidate, compelling him to have a long conversation with Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, the former Chief Whip for the Minority Caucus in Parliament.
Mohammed Muntaka, the NDC MP for Asawase in the Ashanti Region, disclosed that he met with Mr. Mahama on Saturday over the party’s squabble, and declared that the controversy in the party was finally over.
“To all our supporters within and without. I had a lengthy meeting with my big brother, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, on Saturday evening over the parliamentary reshuffle.
“I want to first of all thank him for the words of advice and encouragement to me as a young brother,” the Asawase NDC lawmaker wrote on his Facebook wall.
Muntaka added that “His Excellency’s intervention has brought an end to all the brouhaha associated with the reshuffle. We are for the interest of our party, NDC.”
“We need to move on as a party and channel all our energies towards 2024 elections. I thank all our chiefs, queen mothers, Imams, and supporters for your prayers and solidarity.
“I pray for Allah’s guidance in all our affairs. Long live NDC, long live Ghana,” he wrote.
Background
It would be recalled that some angry NDC supporters in Asawase Constituency stormed the party’s regional office in Amakom and burned car tyres in protest of their MP’s dismissal as Minority Chief Whip in Parliament.
The disgruntled NDC members described the action as unfair and cruel, claiming that Alhaji Muntaka was the best candidate for the position of Minority Chief Whip.
However, following his marathon meeting with former President Mahama on Saturday, the Asawase lawmaker stated that the parliamentary reshuffle issue should be put to rest, urging his supporters to work in the NDC’s best interests.
