Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II, the President of the National House of Chiefs, has bemoaned the ill-treatment meted out to chiefs in running their day-to-day activities.
Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II, who happens to be the Paramount Chief of Sefwi Anwiaso, explained that chiefs are not being resourced, and that affects their operations.
The Paramount chief, in an interview, highlighted the inadequate sitting allowances being paid to the National House of Chiefs during meetings.
“The National House of Chiefs is not well-resourced in handling chieftaincy issues. The Chiefs or National House of Chiefs institution is being treated like secondary school students. So when they want to send money is per head and shared among members. When we go for meetings, they know that we are eighty, let’s say, representing the whole region, so they send money according to that exact number”.
“If I tell you as President of the National House of Chiefs, my sitting allowance is GH₵300.00, my hotel accommodation is GH₵300.00, so ask about other members. And you know a chief doesn’t travel alone. He has a driver and sometimes a servant who travels with him at all times. When that happens, I have to look for a hotel for them and feed them”, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II noted in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Joy.
The President of the National House of Chiefs also spoke about the lack of funds for handling conflict resolution mechanisms as chiefs.
According to Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II, all the chiefs responsible for handling alternative dispute resolutions are ready to perform their duties, but they lack the necessary funds that facilitate their work.
Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II also noted that till now, there are some regions that lack councils.
The President of the National House of Chiefs appealed to the government to ensure that lawyers are being designated in all the regions to facilitate administrative functions.
