The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has called on striking medical doctors and other health professionals at the Tamale Teaching Hospital to call off their strike and return to the negotiation table.
Mr. Akandoh made this passionate appeal while addressing the media on April 24, 2025, following the dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr Atik Adam, leading to the strike of the health workers.
The Health Minister also acknowledged the concerns raised by staff at the facility but promised to ensure the welfare and other essential needs of the health professionals are met, and proceeded to donate some equipment to the facility.
“My humble appeal to the wonderful medical doctors and health professionals at the Tamale Teaching Hospital is that I am the first person to take care of your interest. Therefore, let’s call off the strike, and let’s all regroup and strategise going forward,” he said.

He also highlighted the need for a more sustainable way of maintaining hospital infrastructure and equipment provided by the government.
“There are some of the things we easily do with our internally generated funds. It is just not sustainable for the government to keep donating equipment to health facilities, and at the end of the day, when the equipment is obsolete, we run back to the government for money to either maintain or replace this equipment,” he warned.
The CEO of the hospital was sacked after the Health Minister made an unannounced visit to the hospital on Tuesday, 22, 2025, to assess conditions on the ground.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has condemned the minister’s actions at the facility and demanded an apology from him.
