Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Puamang has announced that the Judiciary has appointed three High Courts to specifically address illegal mining cases, particularly those associated with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).
Justice Puamang made this announcement during his address at the Annual Chief Justice’s Mentoring Programme on Wednesday, December 17.
This initiative aims to instil justice-oriented values in Senior High School students, ignite interest in judicial professions, and educate future guardians and interpreters of the law.
While discussing the theme “Advocating Greener, Sustainable Justice: The Environment and Justice,” Justice Puamang reiterated the Judiciary’s strong commitment to addressing illegal mining. He mentioned that the specialised courts are anticipated to be inaugurated early next year.
“The Chief Justice has already assigned High Court judges, who are being adequately resourced, to specifically handle cases referred by NAIMOS and other related matters, including efforts to recover state properties that have been lost,” he stated.
At the same gathering, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, emphasised the government’s resolve to fight illegal mining.
He revealed that the monitoring of imported earth-moving equipment has led to over 1,000 excavators currently being detained by the Ministry.
