Legal counsel for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has confirmed that his client has formally applied for an extension of his stay in the United States, citing ongoing medical care and recovery as the reason for the request.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, January 8, 2026, lawyer Frank Davies explained that Mr Ofori Atta travelled to the United States for a medical procedure which has since been completed.

However, he said the former minister remains under medical supervision as part of a broader recovery process.

According to Mr Davies, Mr Ofori Atta continues to consult regularly with his medical team, who are closely monitoring his condition and advising on the next steps in his treatment.

He noted that medical guidance may require the former minister to remain in the United States for further observation to ensure a full and safe recovery.

Mr Davies disclosed that Mr Ofori Atta’s visa is due to expire on February 14, making it necessary for him to apply for an extension of stay.

He described the application as a routine immigration process used by individuals who are unable to travel due to health or other unforeseen circumstances.

Addressing public speculation, Mr Davies rejected suggestions of wrongdoing and said the matter is being handled lawfully through the appropriate immigration authorities.

“He is in constant consultation with his medical team, and if they advise that it is necessary for him to remain in the United States for continued care, then applying for an extension is the proper and lawful thing to do,” he said.

The extension request has been submitted to United States Immigration authorities, who are expected to assess the petition and make a determination in due course.

Mr Davies urged the public to exercise patience and avoid drawing conclusions while the process remains ongoing, adding that seeking medical care and following professional advice should not be misconstrued as an attempt to evade responsibility.
