Netizens have strongly condemned New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team member, Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah, popularly known as Benghazi, over comments claiming that Ghana belongs to the Ashanti people.
Speaking on Onua FM, Benghazi claimed that all other tribes were given places to live in Ghana by the Ashantis, whom he described as the true custodians of the country.
He further argued that history proves the Ashanti people were already present before other ethnic groups moved to settle in various parts of the country and developed their own cultures.
“I want to tell the NDC that Ghana belongs to the Ashantis. Historically, other tribes were given places to settle by the Ashantis. They are the true custodians of this land, and others came to meet them here,” he said.
NPP communicator who dared Ghanaians to burn him alive on TV if Mahama wins 2024 elections apologises
His statement has since sparked backlash on social media, with many users criticising the comments as divisive and unhelpful to national cohesion.
One netizen stated that such commentary from the NPP communicator should not be tolerated in public discourse, questioning its relevance to the country’s pressing issues.
“Masa, these kinds of commentary should not be allowed in our public discourse. Shame on the communicator. What does that irrelevant information contribute to nation building and addressing the primary concerns of Ghanaians?” one user questioned.
Another user also called on the NPP to rein in its communicators, expressing concern over the nature of such public statements.
“The NPP needs to seriously rein in some of these idiotic communicators as soon as possible. Cos why do you sit on radio and spew such nonsense? Imagine me as a Fante listening to this rubbish. The party needs a serious overhaul of its whole communication department,” another wrote.
A third commenter rejected the claim outright, arguing that even traditional authorities would not support such a position.
“That’s nonsense. Even His Majesty the King would not say this. Ga lands, Techiman lands, Fante lands, Volta lands, Dagbon lands, Mamprusi lands, etc. are not for we Ashantis. Stop the fanfooling,” another commented.
