Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has lamented that state institutions have failed badly in enforcing building and environmental regulations, contributing to Ghana’s constant flooding crisis.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, he questioned why illegal structures continue to appear around dams and waterways despite clear laws against such developments.
“Nothing is being monitored, nothing is being enforced,” he said.
The political science lecturer blamed city authorities and local assemblies for neglecting their responsibilities while collecting salaries from taxpayers.
“Are they doing their work? They are sleeping over the job,” he stated.
According to him, poor supervision and weak enforcement have allowed dangerous construction activities to continue unchecked.
“If they were working the way they are supposed to work, you cannot have permits to build around certain areas of the dam,” he explained.
Dr Asah-Asante also criticised citizens for ignoring regulations and behaving recklessly.
“We are throwing the rules away. People build anyhow,” he said.
He warned that unless authorities begin enforcing laws properly, the country will continue to suffer flooding every rainy season.
“Lamentation will not stop if we don’t stop the wrong attitude and wrong enforcement,” he added
