Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has formally announced his intention to run for the National Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), presenting himself as a leader prepared to make significant sacrifices to unify the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In a statement released on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the Ashanti Regional Chairman indicated that his candidacy follows thorough discussions with party elders and his Maker, emphasising that his motivation is not personal ambition but rather a necessity to guide the party through a pivotal moment.
“The road ahead will demand vision, courage, and unwavering determination. Leadership at this moment requires bravery, the courage to stand firm, make difficult decisions, and be willing to lose everything if necessary for the NPP,” Wontumi declared.
His announcement paves the way for a potentially intense competition for the party’s highest leadership role ahead of its national executive elections.
Wontumi positioned his candidacy as a reaction to a party that has encountered difficulties and absorbed tough lessons, highlighting the importance of consistent, principled, and dedicated leadership to rebuild trust and empower the grassroots.
The businessman-politician, a significant figure in the party’s stronghold region, described himself as “grassroots personified”.
He committed to appreciating every member “from our elders to the youthful allies”.
“We are ready. We are organised. We are built for the battle ahead,” Wontumi asserted, concluding his statement with a call for collective effort to “position the NPP to win decisively in 2028”.
