The Asante Kingdom is mourning the loss of one of its most revered leaders, Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

In accordance with Asante tradition, the Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo Dynasty have officially informed the Asantehene of the passing of the Mamponghene.

The announcement, made by Mamponghemaa Nana Agyakoma Difie II at the Manhyia Palace, marks the end of an era for one of the country’s most respected traditional leaders.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu, who served as Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, held the Silver Stool, a position of great significance in the Asante Kingdom.

As second-in-command in the traditional hierarchy, he often acted on behalf of the Asantehene in matters of custom.

Born on December 31, 1939, Daasebre Osei Bonsu passed away at the age of 86, after 26 years of leadership.

Before becoming Mamponghene, he was known as Oswald Gyimah-Kessie, a lawyer and economist, and served as Registrar at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

A figure of diplomacy and dedication, Daasebre Osei Bonsu leaves behind a legacy of service to both his people and the broader chieftaincy institution.

His last public appearance was during the recent Akwasidae at Mampong, where he spoke out against divisive tribal politics during the protest over the Mampong Municipal Assembly’s MCE selection.
